Lena's German Market Development Internship experience in Derry UK.

German Market Development Intern – Lena Petrovic

Lena travelled from Austria to the UK for a 6-month German Market Development Internship in Derry.

What was your motivation to apply for this German market development internship?

I wanted to get some hands-on experience in the business world. I was tired of learning from my management books.

What were your main tasks during the German market development internship?

I helped establish a market penetration strategy for Germany. My company trusted me to represent them at many conferences across the UK and EU, where I was talking to potential customers and spreading the word about our services. I acted as an assistant to the CEO and helped him out with his daily tasks. My responsibilities included managing an existing client base in Belgium, where I learned what it takes to look after a paying customer. As a part of the Marketing team, I helped create advertisements, brochures, and looked after the logistics of marketing material travelling between the many offices across the globe.

In what ways do you think you were developed as a professional in a business environment during your internship?

Learning the importance of managing upwards as an intern was probably the most important skill I developed. Whilst the IT and Marketing skills are taught at University, the nuances of business communication can only be learned by doing – and having the space to make mistakes.

What did you like the most during your German market development internship?

I particularly enjoyed working with my boss and the CEO of the company. We were very similar, personality wise, so I got to learn how he dealt with his shortcomings and apply those tactics to my own professional life.

How did you spend your time outside working hours?

There are two options in a small city like Derry: you either jog after work or go for a pint. Happy to say I did both. I ran my first half-marathon and also had more beer than in my whole life prior.

Was it easy to adapt to your new environment?

I loved every second living in Derry – it’s safe to say that it felt like home from day one and that I feel, even still, a part of the community. Derry is a city with a difficult history, and the town’s men and women still carry resilience and humour only found in those who have lived to see such unfortunate times. Coming from a war torn country myself, their mentality was quite familiar and communication was easy and natural. I was able to integrate quickly with the locals, and eventually I even picked up the local dialect. The music they listened to, their mannerisms, even food were not different to my preferences.

What was the funniest thing that happened during your internship?

In an attempt to make friends during my first week, I went to a pub that had an Open Mic – essentially an evening where everyone present has an opportunity to go up to the stage and sing. After finally mustering up the courage, I got up there, sang my favourite song, announced to the whole pub that I am new in town and looking for friends. The funny thing is – it worked. I had a line of people waiting to meet me afterwards, and I met friends I will have for life.

How satisfied were you with ESPA’s services and accommodation?

I had accommodation in the city centre in a beautiful house. Living there was a great experience – the only problem was the room being too small and only fitting a bed. I didn’t have a desk and working from home was impossible, even though it was sometimes required from me. The ESPA agents throughout the application stage were responsive and helpful. A big thank you to Marika who managed to get me an interview with my company, even though they weren’t initially interested.

Would you recommend ESPA to your friends?

I would. My time in the UK was the happiest of my life, and it wouldn’t have been possible without ESPA. Thank you all for your work.

What’s next for you?

The company I interned for actually offered me a permanent remote position as a Sales Representative for the DACH region. I am looking forward to growing my career with them!
