Lena's Communication and Relationship Management Internship experience in Bath UK

Communication and Relationship Management Intern – Lisa Stolpe

Lena travelled from Germany to the UK for a 6-month Communication & Relation Management Internship in Bath.

What was your motivation to apply for this communication & relation management internship?

For me it was a university requirement to go abroad, and I personally chose the UK to not only improve my English skills but also discover the culture and people. As I had never worked in an office environment I really wanted to learn as much as possible, and see how the lessons from my degree could be applied in the real world. I specifically chose Marketing and Communication and I consider myself an open and chatty person, and could see myself going into this area after my graduation.

What were your main tasks during the internship?

Working in such a small business often meant helping a bit here and there, something I particularly enjoyed. Daily tasks were always changing so it was never boring. A big part of my tasks included the communication with universities as well as businesses. Sending and responding to emails, creating campaigns, managing social media channels and having meetings with university contacts.

In what ways do you think you were developed as a professional in a business environment during your internship?

I became a lot more independent and confident in my skills as I was given enough freedom to work on things by myself. This did also come with making many mistakes but I never felt worried about making them, instead using them as learning opportunities. Going back to university I will hopefully keep this attitude. I also learned more about my interest and strengths, sometimes very useful as I will soon have to apply for masters degrees.

What did you like the most during your communication & relation management internship?

My colleagues. Going to work was always fun as I thoroughly working with them. Wether it was actually working on projects together, or coffee and lunch breaks, there was never a boring minute.
The atmosphere in an office can be such a game changer and I hope that I also took part in making my colleagues enjoy their time here.

How did you spend your time outside working hours?

Outside of work I loved exploring Bath and meeting up with friends. While it is a relatively small city, everything reachable by foot, there was still enough to do, to not get be bored.
I especially enjoyed the cafés and bookshops, where you could always find a cozy place to hide out from UK weather.

Was it easy to adapt to your new environment?

While it was a bit difficult at first to adapt to living in a new place, a new work environment and speaking a different language all day long, I always felt supported by my colleagues.
Especially having other interns around who are going through similar experiences was really helpful, as we could learn our way around together.

What was the funniest thing that happened during your internship?

Probably Mark, Marika and their Nerf guns. In especially funny moments the two of them would pull them out and occasionally also hit others. Always accidentally of course. But it did make everyone laugh and I loved seeing everyone having a bit of banter.

How satisfied were you with ESPA’s services and accommodation?

I was really happy with everything. The house was close enough to work so that I could walk every day, and other interns also weren’t too far away.
In case I had any issues, ESPA was always quick to help and answer any questions I had.

What’s next for you?

Going back to uni 🙁
